Operate and Maintain Chainsaws 1 Day
Face to Face
Provides students with the knowledge and practical skills to safely operate, maintain and store chainsaws. Training covers pre use checks, safe cutting techniques, routine maintenance and hazard controls in line with workplace procedures. Accredited units in this training are:

- Work health and safety requirements
- Risk assessment and hazard identification
- Hierarchy of hazard control
- Types of chainsaws and components
- Chainsaw safety features and controls
- Personal protective equipment selection and use
- Pre operational inspection and fault identification
- Fuel mixing and refuelling procedures
- Starting and stopping techniques
- Safe handling and carrying methods
- Cutting techniques and body positioning
- Limbing and cross cutting methods
- Working on slopes and uneven ground
- Kickback prevention and control
- Routine maintenance and chain sharpening
- Bar and chain replacement
- Cleaning and storage procedures
- Environmental protection requirements
- Emergency procedures and first aid response
- Lunch, or buy from nearby cafes
- Safety footwear
- Sturdy work clothing
- Suitable UV protection
- Warm clothing for cold conditions
- Hold a valid USI
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
- Be physically fit to perform high force manual handling tasks, including the strength to control a running chainsaw.
- Full-length sleeves and trousers with certified safety-toe boots or shoes.

Students deemed competent will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment as required by the Australian Qualifications Framework. Statements are issued by Safe Work Training RTO 21604. To keep skills and knowledge current, Safe Work Training recommends refresher training every 3 years.

What is a USI?
All students enrolling in nationally recognised training in Australia need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an exclusive 10-digit number consisting of letters and numbers that will be used to link a student’s account to all their training records.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. At least 18 years of age
How often is refresher training?
There is no refresher period for this unit. Consideration should be given to attending a refresher if there is considerable time since last training in chainsaws was completed.

Who needs to do this course?
Anyone using a chainsaw for either professional or personal use.
Where is the training held?
Bendigo Safe Work Training Centre. 72 Powells Avenue, East Bendigo VIC 3552
What do I need to bring on the day?
Please bring your USI. You can bring your lunch or there are lunch venues nearby. All PPE and equipment will be provided.
What do I wear on the day?
Wear closed safety footwear for practical elements of the training. Wear long sleeve shirt, long pants. Be sure to bring a good jacket because you may be outside. All PPE and equipment is provided.
Do I need to bring my own safety equipment?
No. Other than suitable clothing for the weather, we provide all PPE and equipment.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Yes. You must be physically capable to perform high force manual handling tasks, including the strength to control a running chainsaw.
Can I bring my own chainsaw and PPE?
No. All equipment and PPE will be provided for the course. We are unable to assess any private chainsaw or PPE that it meets current standards.
Will I be trained on real chainsaw equipment?
Yes. Practical training includes using a chainsaw for cutting fallen timber as well as the cleaning and maintenance of a them.
