Fire Warden and Chief Fire Warden Combo provides the skills and knowledge required to perform the roles and responsibilities of workplace Wardens and Chief Wardens. Students learn to manage evacuations, coordinate emergency responses and operate within established emergency procedures. Accredited units in this training are:
- Regulations and legislation
- Emergency management framework
- Emergency plans and procedures
- Structure and roles of the emergency control organisation
- Chief warden, wardens and responder responsibilities
- Hazard identification and risk assessment during emergencies
- Communication systems and protocols
- Alarm and warning systems
- Leadership and decision making in emergencies
- Coordination of evacuation and shelter in place
- Confine small emergencies using first response equipment
- Fire extinguisher and fire blanket selection and use
- Managing smoke and toxic atmospheres
- Liaison with emergency services
- Accounting for occupants
- Post incident actions, reporting and debriefing
- Closed footwear
- Lunch, or buy from nearby cafes
- Hold a valid USI
- Minimum age 15 (under 18 requires parent/guardian consent)
- Be physically fit to lift and hold a fire extinguisher
- Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to participate in the course
Students deemed competent will be issued with a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment as required by the Australian Qualifications Framework. Statements are issued by Safe Work Training RTO 21604. To keep skills and knowledge current, Safe Work Training recommends refresher training every 1 to 3 years, depending on other qualifications, and frequency

How long is the course?
Half day. Eg 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Are there any training course prerequisites?
Unique Student Identifier (USI): Required for all participants. Create or retrieve your USI at www.usi.gov.au. Language Proficiency: Basic understanding of reading and writing in English. Physical Ability: Ability to perform duties, use fire equipment, and assist in evacuations.
What is a USI?
All students enrolling in nationally recognised training in Australia need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an exclusive 10-digit number consisting of letters and numbers that will be used to link a student’s account to all their training records.

No
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. At least 15 years old. Parental consent is required if under 18
How often is refresher training?
Yes. Refresher training is recommended every two years as per Australian Standard AS 3745

What is a fire warden?
Fire Wardens, including Chief Wardens and other Emergency Control Organisation (ECO) members, help manage emergencies and support occupants until emergency services arrive.
Does my workplace need a Fire Warden?
Yes. Australian Standard AS 3745 requires businesses to have Fire Wardens and an emergency plan. Each workplace should have an Emergency Control Organisation (ECO), which may include: Chief Fire Warden Deputy Chief Warden Communications Officer Area and Floor Wardens (for large facilities) First Aid Officer
Do I need to be physically fit?
A general level of fitness is required to be a fire warden. Individuals will need to be able to carry and use a fire extinguisher and move around their work site and assist individuals during evacuations.
Do I have to do all three units?
The fire warden course incorporates working in and leading emergency situations in the workplace and includes the fire extinguisher component. The 3 units are required for this competency.
What do I wear on the day?
Wear closed shoes. Runners are okay. No thongs. Wear long sleeve shirt, long pants. Be sure to bring a good jacket if it’s cold outside. All PPE and equipment is provided.

What if I have an injury or medical condition?
Participants will need to be able to operate a fire extinguisher during training.

Support is available. Let us know when you enrol – we’ll work with you to ensure you can complete the course successfully.
What if I fail?
We aim to support every student to succeed. If you require extra help, we may provide one-on-one coaching, additional practice, or self-paced learning options to help you meet the assessment requirements.
