No prerequisites listed for this course.
You receive a Certificate of Completion from Safe Work Training (RTO 21604). This supports compliance with section 21(2)(e) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, which requires employers to provide information, instruction, and training to employees. Refresher training is recommended every 3 years.
Is this a nationally accredited course?
No. This is a Non-Accredited Spill Kit Awareness Training course. It provides essential practical skills and knowledge to meet the employer's general duty of care under the Victorian OHS Act 2004 and OHS Regulations 2017.
What certification will I receive?
You will receive a Certificate of Completion/Attendance detailing the topics covered, which serves as your record for OHS compliance and professional development.
Does this training meet our legal requirements in Victoria?
Yes. It supports your legal requirement under the OHS Act to provide a safe working environment and necessary instruction and training to workers who handle or may be exposed to hazardous substances. The content aligns with Victorian legislation and relevant Australian Standards.
How often should this training be repeated?
While the certificate does not expire, refresher training is strongly recommended every 3 years, or whenever there is a change in your workplace's hazardous materials, spill kits, or emergency procedures, to ensure competency and preparedness.
What makes this course "Awareness" training?
This course focuses on the practical response required by general workers. It covers how to assess, contain, clean up, and report a spill using a standard workplace spill kit. It does not certify you as an advanced Hazmat responder or a specialized environmental manager.
Will we get hands-on experience using a spill kit?
Absolutely. The course is highly practical. You will learn the correct use of various absorbent materials, protective equipment, and containment techniques through hands-on exercises using the supplied training spill kits.
Do we need to supply any equipment for the training?
No. We supply all the necessary training materials, including various spill kits (e.g., universal, oil/fuel, chemical), PPE, and mock hazardous materials for the practical clean-up exercises.
Is there a test or assessment?
Yes, the course includes a short theory assessment (quiz) to ensure you can apply the information provided, including identify hazards and implement standard controls effectively.
Does the course cover the use of PPE?
Yes. A core component of the training is understanding the hazards of different substances and selecting and correctly donning the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the spill kit before responding to the spill.
What types of spills are covered?
The course covers the most common spills encountered in a workplace: General purpose (coolants, water-based liquids), Oil and Fuel (hydrocarbons), and Chemical (corrosives and other hazardous liquids).
How long is the training session?
The Spill Kit Awareness course typically runs for 2 to 3 hours, depending on the number of participants.
If the course is held at our workplace (on-site), what is required?
We require a suitable, clear indoor or outdoor area where a simulated spill and clean-up exercise can be safely conducted (e.g., a quiet bay in the warehouse, a clear training room, or a yard).
Will the training cover our specific workplace chemicals?
Yes, if delivered on-site. We strongly recommend providing us with a copy of your workplace's Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for your most common or high-risk chemicals. We will reference these in the training to make the content site-specific and immediately applicable.
What should participants wear?
Participants should wear their usual work uniform and closed-toe shoes, as they will be participating in practical, hands-on spill clean-up exercises.
