This nationally recognised course delivers MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus, giving operators the skills to safely prepare, operate and maintain breathing apparatus in an irrespirable atmosphere in line with AS/NZS 1715:2009. It suits workers who wear breathing apparatus in confined spaces or around hazardous gases, vapours or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. Delivered face to face over a half day, it combines a knowledge assessment with practical observation of pre-use checks, fitting, operation and concluding tasks. Participants deemed competent receive a Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS216.

- Physical capability to wear and work in breathing apparatus, which can be physically demanding and in small spaces
- Participants with an injury or medical condition, or who need language, literacy or numeracy support, should contact Safe Work Training before booking so reasonable adjustments can be arranged
On being deemed competent, participants receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus, issued at the end of the training day.

Are there any training course prerequisites?
o Unique Student Identifier (USI): Required for all participants. Create or retrieve your USI at www.usi.gov.au. o Language Proficiency: Basic understanding of reading and writing in English. o Physical Ability: Ability to perform duties, use fire equipment, and assist in evacuations.
What is a USI?
All students enrolling in nationally recognised training in Australia need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI). A USI is an exclusive 10-digit number consisting of letters and numbers that will be used to link a student’s account to all their training records.

No
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. At least 15 years old. Parental consent is required if under 18
How often is refresher training?
Refresher training is recommended every year. Annually. AS/NZS 1715: Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment recommends regular training and retraining, particularly for high-risk environments.

Who needs to do this course?
Examples: o Confined space workers entering areas with possible atmospheric hazards o Workers in chemical plants, refineries, or oil and gas o Maintenance crews working in environments with hazardous airborne contaminants o Wastewater treatment and sewer workers
Do I need to be physically fit?
Yes. Wearing breathing apparatus during work activities can be strenuous.
What do I wear on the day?
o Wear closed shoes. Runners are okay. No thongs. o Wear long sleeve shirt, long pants. o Be sure to bring a good jacket if it’s cold outside. o All PPE and equipment is provided.
Do I need to shave before training?
o AS/NZS 1715:2009 (Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Equipment) states that facial hair must not interfere with the facepiece seal of a respirator. This means that anyone required to wear a tight-fitting facepiece—such as a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)—must be clean shaven in the sealing area to ensure an effective seal. o For training purposes, students are strongly encouraged to be clean shaven on the day. o Students with facial hair can still participate in training and assessments; however, this will be noted in the training records, and trainers will emphasise that in a real workplace scenario, entry into a hazardous atmosphere without an adequate seal would be non-compliant and unsafe. o Students are encouraged to consult with their employer or supervisor regarding workplace respiratory protection policies.
